TO RIDE or not to ride. This option had been playing in my mind for a while now as traffic in Kuala Lumpur has been becoming an unbearable nightmare for me during the rush hours lately.
But the idea of getting back on the road, after having stopped riding for almost a decade, on two wheels never really took off until I went on a 40km ride on a kapcai.
I discovered that my perception of a moped took a whole new angle after being invited for a press introduction to a new Yamaha 135LC.
I must admit I am not really a kapcai fan, although I owned one once. I am more of a big bike person and was a proud owner of several of the big machines until I gave up the riding passion.
But the new Yamaha 135LC certainly impressed me, especially with its classy stylish futuristic look, its four bright metallic colours – red, blue, green and silver – and of course the acceleration.
My 40-km ride up and down Bukit Tinggi Resort in Bentong was definitely a refreshing introduction to the two-stoke machine.
Kapcai, as I remembered, has always been noisy and not a comfortable motorcycle to handle especially on a long ride.
But the experience with the 135LC over the weekend was surprisingly enjoyable.
The new machine has a much quieter purr. Perhaps the forged piston, rigid 4-point engine mount and muffler makes this machine somewhat different from others on the road.
The slightly wider handlebars make it easier for inward bends while the meter panel allows easy reading at a glance.
The sharp acceleration, the smoothness of the power in shifting gears and easy handling gave me the pleasure of riding again with confidence.
I must admit that on several occasions I underestimated the power of the bike while negotiating bends, causing it to skid as I adjusted myself to the machine.
I subsequently found the bike has more cornering clearance, better brakes, felt more planted and was easier to flick side to side.
The 135LC would also come with loads of power when exiting a corner.
The balancers at both ends of the handlebars provided dynamic handling of the machine, giving it extra stability and comfort and exacting less toll on the rider in such situations.
As I re-acquainted myself with riding again, I forgot at times to downshift and found myself climbing a slope in fourth gear. The bike was not lagging even then.
I learnt later that the new 4-valve engine with forged piston and TPS carburettor fitted with an accelerator pump played a big role in achieving this level of performance.
The low vibration level and monocross suspension also add to the pleasant ride.
Generally, I find Yamaha went further in this segment by providing more power and handling improvements to their machine.
This model features a fashionable aerodynamic cowling that allows smooth airflow for its liquid cooling system, a sporty muffler and a fresh new five-lamp front mask that resembles the Yamaha YZF.
And for RM5,562 on the road, I am toying with the idea of having one to take me to work instead of car
